1:26 am - My great unfinished novel gets me through in the most pathetic of ways.
|
It was our summer and we wanted to drink it in. We made promises then, said we’d never forget each other then and our friendships waxed eternal. And still there was an uncertainity, a tension in the air. High school sweethearts were our own personal embodiment of that tension; the dim prospect of long-distance relationships loomed over their heads and their inevitable heartbreaks were nearly tangible. Colleges would rip their hearts in two and we almost relished in it without knowing the reason why. We placed bets on a few of the couples, namely this one guy and his rocker chick. I bet they’d break up by October, my friend Tom bet they’d break up by September, and a few people under the influence of the great romantics bet they’d stay together forever; that it was true love. I won the fifty bucks when he dumped her on October third and the fifty bucks burned a hole in my wallet with guilt. For a while I wondered if I had caused the break-up. Had I somehow caused their downfall with my bitter prediction? Would they be exchanging vows down the line had I only withdrawn my bet?
(Another piece of prose that will never be anything more.)

I want to make a mixtape or a cd for someone. I want to put pretty little hearts all over it. I want to spell out my opinion of someone using Mirah, Metric, Lasse Lindh, The Killers, Broken Social Scene, and Stars.
Any takers?
